Overhead Lifting Basics

Overhead crane systems can provide unparalleled material handling capability and be the key to increased efficiency, profitability and safety.

Benefits of Overhead Cranes

Efficiency. Move loads from point A to point B using the most direct path, sometimes crossing aisles or passing over obstacles that traditional forklifts and conveyors cannot traverse.

Reduced Costs, Increased Productivity. Overhead cranes enable less product handling, decreasing the likelihood of damage to products and materials and reducing operator error.

Safety. Overhead lifting keeps your employees safer via reduced forklift traffic and increased load visibility for better control. Radio remote controls or SBP pendant push button controls enable operators to control loads at a safe distance.

Types of Overhead Lifting Systems

Overhead Bridge Cranes. These cranes run the length of a facility on an elevated runway system. They offer hook motion in three directions (X, Y Z) enabling vast hook coverage and precise load control.

Jib Cranes. Jib cranes have a pivoting head and boom assembly that can achieve 180° or 360° rotation and often handle lighter loads requiring precise spotting.

Gantry Cranes. Gantry cranes offer an alternative to bridge cranes. This crane uses a floor-level runway with a bridge supported by steel legs and often costs less than bridge cranes.

Work Stations. Modular workstation cranes with enclosed track systems offer an alternative to traditional I-beam and patented track systems. Work stations are easy to install and move and offer a lower profile where headroom is a factor.

Hoists. Hoists lift or lower a load by means of a drum or lift-wheel around which a rope or chain wraps. It may be manually operated, electrically or pneumatically driven and may use chain, fiber or wire rope as its lifting medium.
